Animation directed by Vladimir Degtyarev, written by Arcady Snessarev
The animation was several times re-edited by the artistic council during the process of it's making: If you consider the bog inhabitans look quit Jewish, and after the war many traditional Jewish settlements were swallowed up by thre growth of cities and modern villages and jewish people urbanised and had to find to new positions there in an atmosphere of the late forties where non commitment to communist Russian identity was seen as a reason to denounce persons to the KGB, and banish them, or get them otherwise in trouble. One of the deleted scenes took the goblin before the village cou ncil and was asked: "For how long have you been a Goblin?"For 2.000 years was the answer. It's a fact that many jewish people had difficulties to find steady employment in theater and other rentertainment,, but did find relatively much work at Soyuzmultfilm. The director as well as scriptwriter were among them. Nevertheless many Jews were only hired in freelance positions, and it was more difficult for them to get a regular position there, or getting awards like the Stalin prices, or State Artist price. Which in Soviet times meant better payment.
