Animation directed by Anatoly Karanovich after the fairytale poem by A.S. Pushkin using for 95% the Rhymed English translation by Oliver Elton The storyteller is Boris Chirkov, The animation is told using handpuppets mixed with live footage. Although Stalin had forbidden puppet-animation films in the late 30's, and only after his dead in 1953 the ban was lifted, there was a wide spread tradition of puppet theater and wooden toy making. The early puppet animations after the restart in 1954 fall back on those two traditions, as stopmotion puppet animation had to be reïnvented.
